Making Better Tech Choices

How to improve your decision-making skills as a software engineer or leader

As a software engineer, you are constantly faced with decisions. What technology should you use for a new project? How should you structure your code? What trade-offs should you make between performance and security?

While there is no one right answer to these questions, there are certainly wrong answers. Making the wrong choice can lead to sub-optimal performance, security vulnerabilities, or even complete failure. So how can you become better at making the right choices?

First, it’s important to get as much experience as possible. The more projects you work on, the more familiar you will become with different technologies and approaches. You’ll also start to develop a feel for what works and what doesn’t. These mentors all have vast experience in what works and what doesn’t in various contexts.

Seek out mentors. When you are facing a difficult decision, it can be helpful to consult with a mentor or other experienced individual. These individuals can provide valuable insights and guidance that can help you make the right choice.
